ALBUQUERQUE – New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas and Mothers Against Drunk Driving New Mexico (MADDNM) are teaming up to urge New Mexicans to plan ahead for 4th of July celebrations and not drive after drinking.

“As tens of thousands of New Mexicans head out to celebrate the 4th of July holiday this weekend, I am asking all New Mexicans to plan ahead and not drive after drinking,” Attorney General Hector Balderas said. “Plan ahead by finding a designated driver, scheduling a taxi or car, or using Safe Ride Home services in your area. Don’t put lives in danger or risk getting stopped by local or State Police. It’s just not worth it.”

“Every Fourth of July, nearly 200 people are killed in drunk driving crashes. This doesn’t reflect injuries, court costs, or regret.” MADD New Mexico State Director Aisha Smith said. “There are many options available to all of us. Options that are life-saving. The life you save could be your own, it could be a family member, or a friend. Please take a pledge to designate a non-drinking driver and keep New Mexicans safe.”

New Mexicans also are encouraged to download the ENDWI app for android and iPhones, which has all of the Safe Ride Home phone numbers available in New Mexico, or visit http://www.endwi.com/programs/. Find more information about services available on the 4th of July weekend by visiting the MADDNM website at http://www.madd.org/drunk-driving/.
