LWV News:
The League of Women Voters of Los Alamos will present the forum, “Spent Nuclear Fuel Disposal from Power Reactors” 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 2, in the Jeannette Wallace Room, Building 5 at UNM-LA.
Despite the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 that was to have managed the disposal of high-level nuclear waste through safe, permanent disposal, the high-level waste produced by power plants is still not stored in a permanent location. Instead it is currently located in 78 separate installations across the country. The League of Women Voters of New Mexico is conducting a study of these issues of storage, transport, and disposal of this waste. The study includes presentations by experts.
The Study Committee, led by Karen Douglas, a nuclear engineer at Sandia Laboratory, has created a PowerPoint presentation that will be delivered by Committee Member and former LANL nuclear safety analyst, Kathleen Taylor. She will be joined by John Heaton, chair of the Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance Board that is seeking to develop a Consolidated Interim Storage Facility in southeastern New Mexico.
Please join the LWVLA for refreshments and conversation at 6:30 p.m.
