SANTA FE – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District released the following statement in celebration of LGBT Pride Month.
“June has long been the month that we celebrate LGBT Pride to honor the birth of the modern LGBT rights movement that began at the Stonewall Inn. It is a time to recognize the tremendous contributions the LGBT community makes to New Mexico and our nation, and remember all those who have stood up and fought for equality.
“Just over a year ago, we watched and celebrated as the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and, in a landmark ruling, extended the protections and privileges of marriage to the LGBT community across the country. The decision was a milestone on the journey toward the equal protection and equality for every citizen of our nation.
“As we celebrate Pride and equality this month, we do so with heavy hearts. We mourn the loss of 49 innocent lives in Orlando, 49 sons and daughters, friends and partners who have been taken from us in an act of terror and an act of hate.
“It is painfully clear that as far as we have come, hate and bigotry, prejudice and discrimination have not been extinguished. So as we grapple with the pain and anger, the sadness and fear, and many questions following Orlando, and as we look down the long road toward love and equality, peace and inclusion, we must all remember that we are in this together, one family moving together toward a world where every person – man or women, gay or straight – is treated with dignity and respect no matter who they love, the color of their skin or their faith.”
