LAYMBT News:

The Los Alamos Youth Mountain Biking Team is out hitting the trails and practicing 2-3 times each week.

The team is composed of a high school group (9th-12th) and middle school group (6th-8th). The team has registered with National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). NICA focuses on building a biking community of respect, fun, equity and inclusivity.

New Mexico does not have a NICA league to join so the local groups are riding as part of the Arizona league. This year, there are no scheduled races to participate in due to COVID-19, but the team is out improving their endurance and skills with plans to compete in the seasons to come.

The team’s head coach is Mary Grow, who coached a high school team in Albuquerque and brought her coaching talents to Los Alamos last year. Once a week, the team rides on the trails around town, and once a week the team heads up Camp May Road and rides near the ski hill. There are other special rides planned such as La Tierra on the north side of Santa Fe.

“Los Alamos is a great place to grow a youth mountain biking team. Our focus is on building a community of riders that encourage each other. We often stop and work on difficult sections, trying new approaches, giving tips and always cheering each other on. It’s amazing to see these kids master new skills and see their confidence grow,” Coach Mary Grow said.
