Los Alamos resident Jean Jones suggests that all hikers over 60 years of age know the trails they hike and take someone with them. Jones was rescued Monday night after Los Alamos Police Sgt. Tim Lonz and Los Alamos Fire Department responded to a report that a woman had fallen in an area of the canyon behind the Jewish Center on Canyon Road.

Lonz was first on the scene and found Jones suspended upside down wedged in the rocks. He became concerned that she would fall further so he wrapped his arms tightly around her body and held on to her. Jones said she remembers Lonz telling her to “just hug me” and that he was “incredibly strong”. She said he was hanging from her hip bone and was in incredible pain but was able to twist her hip slightly when Lonz lifted her up and rescued her.

“I must have strong bones,” Jones said. “Nothing was broken, stretched or strained and I was able to walk back uphill when the Fire Department arrived.”

Jones said she has fallen a dozen times this year and that following a June 24 fall on the Ranch School Trail, she also needed the assistance of the Fire Department.

“I know I have to rein it in a little bit,” she said. “I was very lucky that my friend, Jill Foreman, was hiking with me and was able to call for help”.

Jones expressed her gratitude to Lonz and to the LAFD who helped her after both falls.
