Los Alamos Sports Association Honors Top Athletes

The Los Alamos Sports Association, an organization of the media personalities for Los Alamos sporting events made up of Gene Mortinsen – the voice of the Toppers, John McHale of the Los Alamos Daily Post, Mike Maez of KRSN, Rick Picard of KRSN and Phil Scherer of the Monitor present awards recently for the top male and female athletes of the year. The LASA members attend or follow all sporting events in Los Alamos and are in a very good position the pick the top athletes each year. Past inductees include Erin Kirk and Arnaldo Ortiz in 2013, Kiana Zerr and Brian Geyer in 2014, Amber Logan and Jonathan Schueler in 2015, Ashlynn Trujillo and Lane Sanders in 2016,  Sienna Ahlers and Nick Quartieri in in 2018 and Ashley Atencio and Ben Rees in 2018. The top female athlete for 2019 is Alix Hailey. She was a leader in both soccer and basketball. In soccer she was a first team all-star and scored 23 goals and 16 assists and was a front-runner in class 4A. In basketball Hailey was a point guard and the force that helped the Toppers to a second place finish in the district, which was a vast improvement over last year’s performance. The top male athlete for 2019 is Arthur Steinkamp. He was a standout player in two sports for his high school carreer. In soccer he was consistently a top player in the state scoring 43 goals in his senior year, bringing his goal total to 90. He was awarded the top player of the year in 2017 and 2018. As captain he led his team to the championship game this year. In baseball, he was the lead pitcher and pitched a shut-out in the state tournament and was named to the first team for Class 4A and named an All Star by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.
