The Los Alamos Rotary STARS (Service to All Rotary Satellite) will participate in the upcoming Opera on the Rocks at Bandelier for the third year in a row.

The group, which undertakes community and international service projects, will again provide gourmet cheese plates for a requested $10 donation. In addition this year, the group also will offer gourmet dessert plates for a requested $5 donation.

Wine and beer will be for sale from local vendors. Opera Alta will be producing two small pieces with patriotic sing-alongs to tie in with National Public Lands Day. Both opera pieces will be from Mozart and sung in English.

Opera on the Rocks, Bandelier’s signature event, is Saturday, Sept. 26. Due to limitations with parking and to support keeping the area quiet and without car lights, Atomic City Transit will provide transportation to and from the event. Shuttles will pick-up at Sullivan Field in Los Alamos and at the White Rock Visitor Center, beginning at 4 p.m. at both locations.

Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder and Smith’s Marketplace are again generously donating to the Rotary STARS. All of the proceeds raised by STARS at Opera on the Rocks will go toward local and international service projects.

STARS is a satellite of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos. The group has recently embarked on an international project jointly with the El Camino Real Rotary Club in El Paso, Texas, in which it will provide shelter for parents of hospitalized children in Juarez, Mexico who are forced by poverty to sleep on the street outside the hospital. Its recent fundraiser, ¡Fiesta Los Alamos!, raised $12,000 toward the cause. Closer to home STARS undertakes projects that benefit the local community, such as helping elementary students to participate in swim lessons as part of their PE curriculum and sponsoring a youth little league team.

The Los Alamos Rotary STARS is a group of motivated Rotarians who are determined to fit community and international service into their busy lifestyles, while at the same time having FUN!
