LAPS News:

With the return of students to school following the winter break, the Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) Transportation Department reminds drivers to stop when the lights are flashing, and the stop arm is out to ensure the safety of students who ride the school bus.

Drivers also should never pass a bus that is stopped with the red lights flashing and the stop arm out.

Drivers should follow school bus safety rules:

  • First, drive slowly and look for children waiting at the bus stop, walking or riding their bicycles to school;
  • Second, know what the flashing lights indicate. A red flashing light with the extended stop arm means traffic is required to stop, even in both directions of a two-lane road. Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop, so proceed with caution;
  • Be careful when pulling up to a bus stop because children might be running out to the bus;
  • Finally, follow all school zone speed limits, look for students in crosswalks and never pass a bus on the outside of a turn.

In addition, the Transportation Department has had to make some adjustments to bus routes. White Rock high school and middle school students have morning pick-up time changes. Los Alamos Middle School students have pick-up time and bus changes. Aspen Elementary School has one less bus serving that site in the morning. Those students are split onto two separate buses. Barranca Mesa Elementary School has one bus change in the morning.

Please note these adjustments:

  • Aspen Elementary School: Bus 158 is no longer on route at this site in the morning. Bus 153 and Bus 154 will cover students who previously rode Bus 158;
  • Barranca Mesa Elementary School: Bus 148 will be replaced by Bus 158 in the morning. There are no time changes;
  • Los Alamos Middle School: Bus 148 is no longer on route in the morning. Bus 152, 153, and 154 will absorb those students. These buses pick up high school students in White Rock. Pick-up time changes for students at both school sites in the morning.
