His name was announced at a March 12 School Board meeting at which the board narrowed its selection from 15 candidates.

The finalists were interviewed Tuesday by three committees comprised of administrators, school staff members and community members. The school board is scheduled to announce its final selection Thursday.

Schmidt is scheduled to leave his position at LAPS in June.

Also on a short list is Los Alamos Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Gerry Washburn. He is one of four candidates for the position of superintendent at the Roseburg School District in Oregon.

Washburn was selected from a pool of 19 candidates. Following meetings with staff and tours of the 12 schools in the district, the public will be given an opportunity to meet the finalists and additional interviews with the board will be conducted in executive sessions.
