Los Alamos MainStreet Proposes Downtown East Metropolitan Redevelopment Area Designation

MainStreet & Creative District News:

New Mexico MainStreet, on behalf of Los Alamos MainStreet, recently presented Los Alamos County Council with a proposed Downtown Los Alamos East Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA) Designation.

This first introduction of the proposed designation included information on the benefits a site-specific MRA would bring to the East portion of Downtown. Exact boundaries of the new proposed district are still being determined.

The proposed Downtown East MRA Plan would be fully covered in-house through a service request with New Mexico MainStreet and not require any County funding. Such a designation would enable Council to create possible incentives for business and property owners to encourage private investment in line with the County’s own development goals outlined in the Downtown Master Plan; public-private partnership opportunities; district-wide public improvements; tax incentives and tools, including the establishment of a possible Tax Increment Financing District (TIF) or Tax Increment Development District (TIDD) whose funds would support the designated district and not change or increase taxes.

More information will be shared with property owners and the public in the coming months.

Los Alamos MainStreet also plans to work with New Mexico MainStreet and Los Alamos County to activate and promote the benefits of the White Rock MRA, which was approved by Council in Fall 2022, to explore public-private partnership opportunities and development in White Rock in line with the Downtown Master Plan.
