Los Alamos Historical  Society News:

Originally built in 1929 for May Connell, the art teacher at the Los Alamos Ranch School, the Oppenheimer House has a legendary past. Its distinctive design, featuring stone masonry, a fireplace, and large windows, played a role in J. Robert Oppenheimer’s choice of residence during the Manhattan Project. However, time does not play favorites and has taken its toll on this New Mexico treasure.

The continued interest and support of the Los Alamos Community enables the Los Alamos Historical  Society (LAHS) to tell the rich history of Los Alamos. LAHS extends immense gratitude for the support received by the Los Alamos Community and seeks the Community’s assistance again. The LAHS needs help to raise $2 million for the restoration of the Oppenheimer House on Bathtub Row. The restoration’s initial phase costs have surpassed expectations, covering electrical upgrades, foundation stabilization, floor care, and roof repairs.

The Oppenheimer House stands as an ideal setting to share the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer with the world. Oppenheimer’s legacy includes revolutionizing global problem-solving through Big Science and opened the door for technological advancements in New Mexico. This Holiday season, LAHS invites the Community to contribute to opening the doors to the Oppenheimer House.

Upon completion, the Oppenheimer House will become part of the Los Alamos History Museum Campus, serving as a testament to the town’s historical significance. Other sites on the LAHS museum campus includes the Guest Cottage, Romero Cabin, Ancestorial Pueblo Site, and the Hans Bethe House.

For more information on how to contribute and further campaign details please visit our website. Donations can be made through the LAHS website, Giving Tuesday campaign through the Los Alamos Community Foundation, and the Oppenheimer House Go Fund Me campaign.
