LAHS News:
The Los Alamos Historical Society has announced its upcoming lecture, a free event 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 in the Pajarito Room at Fuller Lodge. This lecture features Dr. Miriam Hiebert and promises to engage both the historian and the scientist.
Dr. Hiebert is a materials scientist with a passion for exploring the intersection of science and history. She earned her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2019, focusing on the preservation of glass in cultural heritage collections. During her graduate studies, Dr. Hiebert was introduced to the fascinating story of uranium cubes—a project that began as a side interest and later developed into a dedicated post-doctoral research endeavor. From this research comes Dr. Hiebert’s book, The Uranium Club.
Dr. Hiebert’s lecture will focus on her research and subsequent book highlighting the fascinating history behind the Nazi uranium cubes. A tale of scientific ambition, wartime espionage, and the contrasting fates of the failed German nuclear program and the American success that ushered in the atomic age, The Uranium Club documents the modern day journey to discover more about the creation of the uranium cubes, the race for atomic weapons in WWII, and the lessons these relics can offer today.
Following the lecture will be a book signing of Dr. Hiebert’s book The Uranium Club. Books are available for purchase in the Museum Shop and at the event.
Dr. Hiebert is a research scientist at the National Museum of Natural History, where she leads a Smithsonian-wide glass condition survey to support the preservation of historical artifacts.
The Los Alamos Historical Society extends a heartfelt appreciation to TechSource, Inc. for their generous sponsorship of this Lecture Series and continual commitment to supporting the community.
