Los Alamos Historical Society: Former CIA Spy Bruce Held Reveals ‘Wildest Year’ As Acting NNSA Administrator

Back by popular demand the Los Alamos Historical Society (LAHS) welcomes back renowned CIA clandestine operations officer, Bruce Held to their Lecture Series. Held will talk about his year serving as the Acting Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) in 2013-2014.

“In May 2013, Ernie Moniz, then-Secretary of Energy, entrusted me with the crucial responsibilities of both Associate Deputy Secretary of Energy and Acting Administrator of the NNSA,” Held shared.

This is the first time Held will tell this story publicly describing it as “the wildest year in my life, wilder than anything in my three decades as a CIA spy.”

Held, a veteran with three decades of experience in the CIA, has navigated the clandestine world as a Chief of Station across Asia, Latin America, and Africa, earning accolades such as the CIA Intelligence Commendation Medal for his “tenacity and extraordinary accomplishments during a period of hostilities.” His remarkable journey includes serving as Special Assistant to CIA Director George Tenet, offering a unique perspective on global affairs and security.

In addition to his groundbreaking career in national security, Held is the author behind “A Spy’s Guide to Santa Fe and Albuquerque” a compelling narrative that unveils hidden aspects of New Mexico’s past through the lens of espionage. Available at the Los Alamos History Museum gift shop, this publication offers an intriguing perspective on historical events, demonstrating Held’s extensive knowledge and experiences.

Held’s upcoming lecture promises a captivating insider’s view into the world of nuclear security and intelligence, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of his extraordinary tenure at the NNSA.

The proceeds from this raffle will contribute to the much-needed renovation efforts for the historic Oppenheimer House. The raffle tickets, priced at just $1 each, present a wonderful opportunity for attendees to support the preservation and restoration of this iconic landmark.

“The Oppenheimer House holds immense historical significance for our town, and we’re dedicated to ensuring its legacy perseveres through this renovation project.” The raffle tickets will be available for purchase on-site, and LAHS welcomes both cash and card payments. The winners of the raffle will be drawn at the conclusion of Bruce Held’s lecture, adding an element of excitement to an already insightful evening.
