SPORTS News:
The Los Alamos High School girl’s lacrosse club team wrapped up its second season this spring, continuing to build momentum for one of the fastest-growing sports opportunities for young women in Northern New Mexico.
At the high school level, girls’ lacrosse remains a developing sport statewide, with just four teams competing: Los Alamos, Duke City Scorpions (Albuquerque), Santa Fe Prep, and Santa Fe Turquoise Thunder. Despite the limited number of teams, the level of play continues to rise each year, and Los Alamos has proven to be a competitive and resilient program.
Girls’ lacrosse offers a unique style of play that differs significantly from the boys’ game. Without helmets and with limited physical checking, the game emphasizes speed, agility, precision passing, and strategic movement across a larger field. The result is a fast-paced, high-skill sport that challenges athletes both physically and mentally.
This season, the Los Alamos roster included 17 players ranging from 8th through 12th grade, with nearly half of the team brand new to the sport. Despite the mix of experience levels, and a delayed start to practices due to field availability, the team quickly developed strong chemistry and conditioning.
“One opposing coach commented on how fast and well-conditioned our team was,” Coach Matt said. “It was especially meaningful given that we had less practice time than other programs. The players really committed themselves and it showed on the field.”
The team closed out the season with an exciting 12–9 victory over Santa Fe Turquoise Thunder. In a decisive final quarter, Los Alamos surged ahead with five unanswered goals from an all- senior line-up.
High school girls’ lacrosse in Los Alamos operates as a no-tryout club program, running from March through May and welcoming players of all experience levels.
