LAGC:

It was a busy spring for the Los Alamos Garden Club. During our most recent Memorial Rose Garden work party, the 2024 Los Alamos Garden Club’s Scholarship winner, Cameron Meadows, met and thanked those members present at the Garden.

Meadows, a 2024 Los Alamos High School graduate, plans to attend the University of Colorado Boulder in the fall, majoring in Environmental Design. Throughout his LAHS years Cameron participated in the Eco Club and was active in athletics including hockey, lacrosse and golf, in addition to working and participating in church activities.

Earlier this season on a wet, snowy day, District II of New Mexico Garden Clubs, consisting of Los Alamos Garden Club, Summit Garden Club and the Floral Designers Club held their District Meeting chaired by District Director Kersti Rock. The members in attendance were presented an excellent program on penstemons by Dr. Larry Deaven.

In April, the New Mexico Garden Clubs annual state convention took place in Santa Fe. Chaired by Laurie Hixson, club member and 2nd vice-president of New Mexico Garden Clubs, the convention was a large undertaking and a resounding success! Attendees from across the state came together to commence the convention’s general meeting at the Governor’s Mansion. After the initial meeting at the Mansion, the members participated in additional programming at the convention hotel including a keynote talk by George Duda, a New Mexico expert in forestry, particularly urban forestry. New Mexico Garden Clubs were especially honored by the presence of the South-Central Region Director of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Sarah McReynolds.

Throughout the spring, the Los Alamos Garden Club, has been continuing to pursue its request of Los Alamos County for fencing around the Memorial Rose Garden. At the June meeting of the Historic Preservation Advisory Board, the Club’s request for a fence to deter the deer was presented by Kersti Rock and unanimously approved. The next steps for the Club are to obtain approval from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division and funding for the fence from the County.

The Los Alamos Garden Club meets 10 a.m. on the 3rd Monday of the month, September through May, at Crossroads Bible Church. All are welcome. In addition to our monthly programming, since the early 1950s, the Los Alamos Garden Club has maintained the Memorial Rose Garden. Come Garden with us!
