The Library Board heard a presentation recently by Librarian Norma Covington on the library’s efforts to make the library more accessible to all users.
An accessibility statement has been added to the draft revision of the Library policies stating, “The Library will assist those with special needs, in compliance with federal and state law. The Library is committed to providing equal access to all patrons, including those with disabilities, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).”
In 2022 both Mesa Public Library and the White Rock Branch were evaluated for accessibility along with other Community Services’ facilities as part of the Americans With Disabilities Act Access Audit and Transition Plan. Librarian Norma Covington outlined efforts library staff have taken to address issues identified in this audit.
Improvements:
- Registration for a library card has been improved. There are now large print registration forms and a hybrid sign-up option, including online and mail submission, is being developed.
- Signage has been updated to be more consistent in fonts and size. Improvements include large print Dewey Decimal tables and streamlined genre (fiction, nonfiction, etc) signage.
- Have you used the hold lockers at Mesa Public Library? When placing a hold on a catalog item, there is an option to request only lockers at an accessible height.
- Additional 5-minute parking was added close to the lockers.
- Upgraded privacy screens and larger font presets at catalog and print stations have been added to the public computers.
Services:
- The library is working with the Senior Center to restart and expand home delivery.
- The library has partnered with NM State Library to facilitate signups for the NM Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. The state library serves “New Mexicans statewide who are unable to read a standard printed book due to a disability such as blindness, visual impairment, a physical, or reading disability by providing digital audio books online and by mail. Patrons are provided a customized service based on their preferences.” To learn more please contact Los Alamos Public Library System at libweb@lacnm.us or 505.662.8250.
Facilities Improvements in Process
- Some facility improvements, such as furniture modifications, tactile signage, bollard installation, parking lots and walkways, will require coordination with other county departments.
Are there areas of accessibility improvements that would make your use of the Mesa Public Library and the White Rock Branch Library more enjoyable and safer? Please send your ideas to the Library Board at lb@lacnm.us. This email will reach all board members: Frances Knudson, Beth Stelle, John Nash, Brian Reardon and Sarah Work.
