COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County Council proclaimed November as National Native American Heritage Month during its work session Tuesday night.

Councilor Suzie Havemann read the proclamation:

WHEREAS, November is annually celebrated as National Native American Heritage Month; and

WHEREAS, all residents deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, compassion and justice regardless of gender, age, race, religion, economic status, sexual orientation, or physical, mental, or sensory ability; and,

WHEREAS, the County of Los Alamos supports the rights of every individual to experience equality of treatment and values our diverse population of residents, businesses, and visitors, recognizing that this diversity is a community’s greatest strength; and

WHEREAS, the people of Native American Heritage have made valuable contributions to the growth of this region, New Mexico and the United States and it is critically important that we recognize their accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, individuals are encouraged to learn about Native American communities and to celebrate the contributions that Native American individuals continue to make by participating in the Los Alamos Public Library National Native American Heritage Month Reading and Activity Challenge in November and December, and

WHEREAS, the Los Alamos Public Schools will also celebrate Native American contributions throughout the month through a variety of activities sponsored by the Los Alamos High School Native American Culture Club. 

NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I hereby designate the month of November 2023 as  “NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH” in Los Alamos.
