Los Alamos County 4-H Shines At District & State Contests

Los Alamos County 4-H News:

Los Alamos County 4-H had a great showing at the District and State Contests. This year Los Alamos had 5 Novice, 1 Junior and 5 Senior members participating in the contests.

Novice and Junior members in 3rd through 7th grade participated in the Northern New Mexico District contest held at the end of June in Farmington.

The Senior members, 8th through 12th grade participated in the State Convention held July 11-14 at the New Mexico State University in Los Cruces. The members competed in their various events, attended workshops and participated in community service projects.

Contest results:

  • Wildlife Habitat Evaluation – Wildlife Species Identification and General Knowledge Novice
    • 1st Individual Lillian Schmidt – High Country Team 4-H
    • 2nd Individual Chloe Blackburn – High Country Team 4-H
  • Consumer Decision Making – Members are given a senario and possible options, they then rank the options and orally defend their choices while explaining their decision making process. Novice
    • 2nd Individual Clara Brown – Boots and Bridles 4-H
    • 5th Individual Emma Brown – Boots and Bridles 4-H
  • Family and Consumer Science Skill-a- thon – Identification in areas of home economics including, food and cooking, sewing and clothing construction, and housing and interior design Novice
    • 1st Individual Emma Brown – Boots and Bridles 4-H
    • 2nd Individual Chloe Blackburn – High Country Team 4-H
    • Junior – 1st Individual Anna Ferenbaugh – High Country Team 4-H
  • Entomology – Identification of various inspects and general knowledge questions. Novice
    • 1st Individual Clara Brown – Boots and Bridles 4-H
  • Horticulture – Identification of various plant species or products and general knowledge questions. Novice 
    • 1st Place Team – Los Alamos County
    • 1st Individual Clara Brown – Boots and Bridles 4-H
    • 2nd Individual Chloe Blackburn – High Country Team 4-H
    • 3rd Individual Emma Brown – Boots and Bridles 4-H
  • Favorite Foods – Members prepare a menu and table setting display. They then have 1 hour to complete one dish from that menu for the judges. Members are asked questions on recipe preparation, nutrition and table setting information and are expected to know number of servings, cost per serving and calorie content per serving. They are judged on food safety and kitchen practices. Novice
