The Los Alamos Food Co+op was a long time in the making. In 2006 a collective of local Los Alamos residents came together to form a food co-op. The following year, the collective created a board of directors that worked to open a cooperative market. Finally, in 2011, the Los Alamos Co+op Market opened its doors at 95 Entrada Dr.

“The co-op was created to fill a need for local and organic food here in the Los Alamos,” Community Outreach Coordinator Cara Fazio said. “The Los Alamos Co+op Market was formed by the community, for the community. We support the voice of the member/owners of our store by empowering each membership with a vote in our annual meetings. ”

The Los Alamos Co+op Market strives to provide resources to live healthy lifestyles beyond the kitchen and into the local community through farms, environmentally thoughtful practices and education, she said.

The co-op employs about 40 people and there is a rotating group of volunteers. Triny Vigil, the manager of the meat and cheese department has been there the longest.

“I welcome everyone to come into the Co+op and check out what we have to offer,” Fazio said. “We provide a wide variety of local and global foods, and are consistently bringing in new and exciting products that you may not even know you were looking for. It’s always fun to challenge yourself to pick up a new type of food, vegetable or wellness product and see how you like it, and if not, we will always take it back.”

The Co+op Market is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit http://losalamos.coop.
