Los Alamos Community Foundation Supports YMCA Wildcat Basketball With $1,500 Grant

The YMCA’s Wildcat Basketball program is celebrating another successful season thanks in part to a $1,500 grant from the Los Alamos Community Foundation.

Now in its second year, Wildcat Basketball has quickly become a valued community tradition, bringing together five local elementary schools for an annual championship. The winning team earns the honor of displaying a traveling trophy until the next season, but the real victory extends far beyond the scoreboard.

Wildcat Basketball focuses on building confidence, teamwork, and resilience in young athletes. One of the most inspiring moments this season came when two students who were cut from their teams last year returned, tried out again, and earned their spots. Their perseverance reflects the heart of the program — growth through effort and determination.

The Foundation’s generous grant funded essential equipment for all five school teams, each serving up to 12 players. New basketballs, game balls, ball pumps, blocking pads, floor markers, clipboards, and shooting trainers are enhancing practices and improving skill development in shooting, footwork, defensive positioning, and communication.

“These investments directly strengthen the experience for every player,” said Lahni Zollinger/Sports, Youth and Family Program Director. “The Los Alamos Community Foundation’s support ensures our coaches and athletes have the tools they need to learn, grow, and compete.”

The YMCA is deeply grateful for the Foundation’s commitment to youth development and community wellness. As the program continues to grow, the YMCA remains dedicated to providing opportunities that empower young people both on and off the court.
