Los Alamos Choral Society Spring Concert May 19

The Los Alamos Choral Society Spring Concert conducted by Steven Paxton and featuring pianist Cindy Little is 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19 at United Church of Los Alamos, 2525 Canyon Road.
 
Guest performers from Los Alamos Middle School orchestra program. Special guest Angel Gabriel of the Joy Crew Community Singers.
 
Tickets from CB FOX or at the door, $15 for adults, and students are free.
 
On the first half of the program the chorus will perform works by Viadana, Dello Joio, and Los Alamos composer Frances Meier, concluding with selections from the musicals Brigadoon and Gypsy. The Dello Joio work, A Jubilant Song, features the chorus’ longtime collaborator, Cindy Little, in a virtuosic and exciting piano accompaniment. The theme of the concert as summed up in the title of the Dello Joio work, A JUBILANT SONG. It is partnered with the late Renaissance work by Viadana, Exsultate Justi, which is also about jubilation and singing.
 
After intermission, a string quartet from Los Alamos Middle School will perform an Andante by J. C. F. Bach. The quartet is made up of violinists Hana Raby & Jinheon Kim, violist Keturah Sherrill, and cellist Yeanwoo Park. The students are all members of the award-winning orchestra program at LAMS, under the direction of Jeremy Bleich.
 
The concert will conclude with an enjoyable and inspiring group singing experience led by Angela Gabriel of Joy Crew Singing Experiences.
 
This spring concert will serve as a launch for the Los Alamos Choral Society’s 75th Anniversary year, taking place in 2020. In September of 2019 the LACS will begin rehearsals for their gala Jan. 26, 2020 anniversary concert with the Los Alamos Symphony. That concert will include Part III of Handel’s Messiah, along with works by New Mexico composers Michael Mauldin, Frances Meier, and Mary Badarak. This special concert will conclude with the Agnus Dei from the 1899 Grand Mass by Amy Beach, the first large-scale choral/orchestral work by an American woman composer.
 
Former LACS singers, along with all interested singers from the Northern New Mexico area, are invited to join the choir in preparing for and performing this gala 2020 concert. Regular Choral Society rehearsals begin in Septembe, 7-9 p.m., Tuesday’s in the United Church sanctuary. Singers wishing to perform only the Messiah portion of the concert are invited to attend rehearsals beginning in November.
