Los Alamos Arts Council Celebrates ‘Schubertiade’ Wednesday

Pianist Claire Detels

COMMUNITY News:

Franz Schubert was born Jan. 31, 1797. In the grand tradition of “Schubertiade”, Claire Detels, piano; and Mark Jackson, baritone; will present several Schubert pieces at noon Wednesday in Fuller Lodge.

The show is part of the Los Alamos Arts Council’s Brown Bag series.

The “Schubertiade” tradition originates to composer Franz Schubert’s lifetime in Vienna (1797-1828) when Schubert’s friends gathered for evening house parties dedicated to his and others’ music. Since then, it has become a favorite way to gather classical and romantic music fans for a relaxed afternoon or evening of chamber music and refreshments.

The lunch hour is a perfect time to join artists for this Brown Bag performance.

Born in Seattle, with bachelor’s of arts degree from Colorado College and a master’s degree and PhD from the University of Washington, Detels is Professor Emerita from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where she specialized in late 19th-century opera, feminist aesthetics, Baroque performance practice, African-American and women composers and genres.

Since her retirement and move to Taos in 2014, Detels has performed as a pianist and harpsichordist in Los Alamos, Taos, Santa Fe, Alamosa and Durango for Taos Soundscapes, Taos Artists-in-Schools, Turquoise Trail Baroque, Taos Community Chorus, Taos Opera Institute and Pianotaos. She also performs as a violinist with the Turquoise Trail Baroque, and violist with the Rio Grande Strings and the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra.

Detels is music director at El Pueblito United Methodist Church, and serves on the boards for Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra and Taos Soundscapes, and is co-director with Mark Jackson of the new First Friday Noon at First Presbyterian Concert Series in Taos.

Mark Jackson

Jackson studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music and has sung leading roles with many opera companies in the U.S. and around the world, and has more recently performed with the Taos Chamber Music Group, Taos Community Chorus and Taos Soundscapes. Recently, Jackson was the premiering soloist in Andrea Clearfield’s “Transformed by Fire,” supported by the Aldo Leopold Foundation.

The community is invited to grab a sandwich, soup, or salad from Ruby K’s Bagel Café, and come over to Fuller Lodge to enjoy a superb performance.
