Los Alamos County announces the long awaited ribbon cutting ceremony for the Leisure Lagoon.
The public is invited to join in celebrating this achievement, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 at the Walkup Aquatic Center, 2760 Canyon Road.
The event marks the culmination of many years of dedication and perseverance from passionate community members, elected officials and county employees. Entrance fees will be waived for those who attend.
While the Leisure Lagoon officially opened its doors last December, the ribbon cutting event was delayed due to a myriad of challenges, including hiring lifeguards and ordering a commemorative plaque that was heldup in supply chain networks.
This six-month delay, however, is a mere drop in the pool when reflecting on a kiddie pool conceived by a group of citizens two decades ago and its eventual evolution into the physical Leisure Lagoon facility operating today.
Project Manager Wayne Kohlrust said, “This celebration is not only about the Leisure Lagoon but also about patience, collaboration and resilience.”
An impressive addition to the Walkup Aquatic Center, the Leisure Lagoon offers a unique and enjoyable experience for individuals and families alike, featuring a zero-entry pool, playful water features, a lazy river and a water slide.
After the brief ceremony, and recognition of citizens instrumental in bringing the project to fruition, attendees will have the opportunity until 1 p.m. to swim and explore the new facility.
