Local Students Win State Music Awards

Professional Music Teachers of New Mexico have a yearly competition before their State Conference.
The six districts each have an Honors competition. Los Alamos is in the Northeast I district.
A student enters according to their age and instrument (voice, piano strings.) They play one piece.
Winners then compete with Honors winners from the other districts.
This year the Conference will be in Santa Fe Friday, Nov. 2 and Saturday, Nov. 3.
Winners at the Conference play in the winners recital the evening of Nov. 3. They receive a cash award.
There are other competitions: Auditions entrants play three pieces; students may enter a composition competition.
This year’s Honors was held at the UNM-Los Alamos campus Sept. 29.
Los Alamos students who are also first place winners include Wilbur Wang, Maria Jones and Sopahn Kellogg.
They will compete with five other districts Nov.3 at the State Conference in Santa Fe. They will also play at Los Alamos Arts Council Brown Bag at noon Nov.7 at Fuller Lodge.
