If you’re looking for a way to give back to the community in 2026, how about becoming a blood donor?

Vitalant is the community hub that coordinates a variety of blood drives throughout Los Alamos and White Rock. You can find them at the senior centers, churches, the teen center and occasionally on their mobile unit in either town.

January is National Blood Donor Month and celebrated to honor blood donors and raise awareness about the critical need for blood donations,  especially during winter months.

“Individuals are encouraged to donate during January to help ensure that hospitals have the necessary blood supplies for patients in need,”  Vitalant Case Manager Heidi Chase said. “Blood donations are vital for various medical situations, including  surgeries, trauma care, and treatment.”

The requirements for those who can donate blood have come a long way in recent years, which makes saving lives even easier. Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and only 3 percent of age-eligible people donate blood. The minimum age to donate is 16 and there is no maximum age.

“One in seven people entering a hospital will need a blood transfusion,”  Chase said. “The average transfusion size is 3 units of blood.”

During January, blood donors have a chance to win one of 26 prepaid $500 gift cards (redeemable in Vitalant Donor Rewards store, opt-in required). You can call 877.258.4825 to schedule an appointment and walk ins are always welcome. Visit www.vitalant.org.
