COMMUNITY News:
Local indie game company Only Then Studios is promoting its second board game, Darkleaf Gambit, which is live now on Kickstarter. The community is invited to learn more about the game and test it, 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Mesa Public Library.

Darkleaf Gambit is an immersive, two-player game that takes place in the mythical forest of Haggedorn. Although it’s played using a chessboard and pieces, it’s an entirely new game and requires no chess experience. Players take control of one of six clans, each inviting its own distinct style of play and unique path to victory. No two units move alike or possess the same abilities, strengths, and weaknesses.

All of Darkleaf Gambits artwork was painted digitally and specifically for the game. It was inspired by the developers’ time in Germany’s Schwarzwald—from the creatures and fungi in the dark, lush woods after rain, to the centuries-old myths and folklore, to the local village history of Ötigheim. From there, the team drew on a wealth of other fantasy elements from classic literature, glorious games, and their own childhoods to bring the magic of Haggedorn to life.

Only Then Studios is Jamison and Jess Klagmann, two indie game developers who met while studying writing in Alaska. Fifteen years and two kids later, they’re now based in Los Alamos, spending as much time as possible seeking out wonder and exploring the crossroads of storytelling, strategy, and fun.
