PEEC News:

Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to join the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and Los Alamos Mountaineers (LAM) for an intermediate snowshoe or cross‑country ski adventure, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.

With only a few spaces left, early registration is encouraged. This point‑to‑point winter outing will travel from the Las Conchas Trailhead to the East Fork Trailhead, covering 4.5 miles and approximately 800 feet of elevation gain.

Designed for participants with prior snowshoeing or skiing experience, the trip offers a rewarding challenge and a chance to explore one of the Jemez Mountains’ most scenic winter corridors.

Because conditions vary, the use of snowshoes or skis will be weather‑dependent. If snow is insufficient, the outing will shift to a winter hike, and micro‑spikes such as YakTraks may be recommended.

Trip Logistics

  • Participants will meet at Los Alamos Nature Center (2600 Canyon Road) at 9 a.m. to carpool to the trailhead. Four‑wheel drive and shovels are helpful for winter parking conditions.
  • Those traveling from outside Los Alamos may meet the group at 10 a.m. directly at the Las Conchas Trailhead.
  • Cars will be staged at the East Fork Trailhead for the return, and PEEC has snowshoes available to lend to participants as needed.

About the Trip Leader

  • The outing will be led by Zack Baker, a long‑time PEEC and Los Alamos Mountaineers volunteer known for his enthusiasm, experience, and recent wilderness first aid training.
  • Baker enjoys introducing new skiers and snowshoers to winter travel and guiding groups through safe, memorable day trips.

Admission

  • PEEC/LAM Members: $4 individual / $8 family
  • Non‑Members: $5 individual / $10 family

Registration

  • Space is limited and expected to fill quickly. Anyone interested is encouraged to reserve a spot soon.
