An Open Book: Ex Libris, The Gate To The Garden

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

Note to Reader: This Open Book column is part of my occasional “Ex Libris” series about books that have made a difference in my life. Hope you enjoy it.

A garden gate is normally in one of three positions. A gate that is locked and secure guards what is behind it, and one may assume that we should not enter. A gate that is wide open is inviting, but because there is no transition and no effort is needed to enter, we may not notice our passage. However, a gate that is closed but not secure, is one whose garden is available to us, but only if we make the effort to unlatch the lock. It Read More

One of our most poignant memories of Los Alamos is the vision of Lucy Goose sitting outside the Hen House yard, watching two chicken chicks play over and around their adoptive mother, Turkey 2.

We called her “Little Bear” because she survived a bear attack on the bomb proof nest boxes Don built.

It was the spring of 2014 when Turkey’s vigil ended. In just a few weeks the chicks had grown up enough to run around exploring the Hen House yard by themselves.

Fr. Glenn: In, But Not Of

By Fr. Glenn Jones

Ahhh … ‘tis the season.

Yes … we see riots here, protests there, strife everywhere. Impeachments. Invectives. Insults. Anti-social media. Even people getting beaten over chicken sandwiches and chicken nuggets (really!? Over chicken … or, rather, a chicken-like substance?) Fragmentation. Chaos.

But then … a relative calm descends … at least for a few days. Is it the weather? The solstice? Everybody going on holiday? Or, just maybe … the feeling of the season permeates hearts a teensy bit. We can only hope … and pray. After all, Jesus is called “Prince of Peace.” Read More

Letter To The Editor: Luján Out Of Touch

By MICK RICH
Republican Candidate
U.S. Senate

By endorsing abortion during Advent, New Mexico Rep. Ben Ray Luján has demonstrated just how far apart he is from Christians and Catholics.

As Christians around the world celebrate the beginning of Jesus’ life on Earth, Ben Ray Luján celebrates something very different. Mr. Lujan favors ending the miracle of life before it has a chance – or a choice. This is so blatantly offensive; it makes you wonder if he is writing off New Mexico’s Christians and Catholics.

NARAL has awarded Luján a 100 percent pro-abortion score for his votes in Congress. Read More
