Do you like to meet with other community members to discuss books and explore interesting topics? The Los Alamos County Library staff are pleased to announce that the summer book club series continues in July with two additional in-person discussions.
These discussions will be hosted by different facilitators, one at each library branch, and are part of the 2023 adult summer reading program. Participant will earn a badge for the 2023 summer reading challenge. But reading challenge participation is not a requirement for attending a book club. All patrons with an interest in the discussion titles and topics are welcome.
On Thursday, July 6 from 6-7:30 p.m., Engineering Librarian Sarah Hayes from the Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library and Sr. Librarian Eva Jacobson from the Los Alamos County Library System will co-host an Oppenheimer themed book discussion at the White Rock Branch Library. The discussion is free of charge and open to all community members interested in sharing knowledge and perspectives on the life, work, and legacy of J Robert Oppenheimer. Participants will discuss any titles they have read, watched, or listened to within the overall theme of “all things Oppenheimer” as we await the much-anticipated biographical movie, “Oppenheimer” scheduled for theatrical release on July 21, 2023.
The second July book club is a discussion of the title “Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century” by author Alice Wong. The book club will take place on July 20 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Mesa Public Library. The discussion will be led by Adult Services Librarian, Norma Covington. Norma is the head of the accessibility advisory group at the library system, and she will facilitate a discussion of a series of essays from the selected title. During the discussion, participants will explore personal and every-day stories on disability, accessibility, diversity in experience, spaces, intersectionality, and disability culture. Copies of the discussion title are available in many formats from both branches and online.
