Yesterday at 3:30 p.m., I walked my leashed dog across one of the baseball fields starting from the parking lot at the White Rock Transfer Station. I passed the sign posted on the fence “All Pets Must Be On A Leash”.
I started walking my dog close to the fence of Field #3. While walking, I noticed a man crossing the large soccer field to my left, with a dog running about 60-100 feet ahead of him. I did not see any danger because the man was fairly close behind him.
My dog – an Australian shepherd mix, weighing 50 lbs. – was sniffing the grass along the fence of Field #3 when all of a sudden the man’s dog – a large black lab – was on top of my dog. We did not hear or see the dog approaching. The owner came running over to pull the dog off of my dog so my dog was able to escape.
I ran toward my dog and got her into my car. I did not stop to ask the man’s name because I wanted to get my dog home as soon as possible to make sure she did not have any wounds that needed treatment, which she did not. She was just totally intimidated, unable to grasp what had just happened.
I immediately called Los Alamos Animal Control and reported the incident. Unfortunately, I was unable to give the dispatcher the dog owner’s name. I drove back to Overlook Park to search for the man, but he must have left the park already. I spoke with one of the county workers about the incident, and they will be on the lookout as well.
The man was at least 6 feet tall, weighing about 200 lbs. I had never seen him at the park before although I am there every day.
The dog was a black lab-mix about 26-30 inches tall, weighing about 100+ lbs.
I call on Los Alamos County to immediately release a law reversing the off-leash policy!
Thank you.
