By THERESA CULL I am writing to express my support for Stephanie Garcia Richard for New Mexico State Representative, District 43.
My partner and I met Stephanie through the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos before her first campaign for public office. As Unitarians, we have 7 principles that serve as a framework for our lives, one of which is the inherent worth and dignity of every person. I believe that Stephanie has shown that she represents every New Mexican, not just those with money or power.
I am confident that her decisions will be thoughtful and principled. She truly seeks to understand the issues her constituents face, what’s best for them, and what is right.
My one experience with Stephanie’s opponent doesn’t indicate a similar mindset. Although my partner passed away before marriage equality became law, I supported a couple who had to go before a judge to be granted a marriage license in Los Alamos because Stephanie’s opponent, as County Clerk, refused to issue them one.
At the time, this appeared to be a party-line decision, not one that was thoughtful and principled. Her decision caused this couple unnecessary hardship and wasted taxpayer money. I am voting FOR Stephanie because she has shown that she will make the right decisions that benefit ALL New Mexicans.
