Letter To The Editor: Safety Along NM4 Construction

By Cheryl Wampler and Francisco Uribe
White Rock

We see that some necessary construction has been taking place along NM highway 4 between 502 and White Rock. However, we would like to call your attention to the lack of safety being practiced with this work.

This road is very narrow, without shoulders, and quite busy most of the time, besides being the only practical ingress and egress for White Rock. Large construction machinery is operating right beside the road, with no barriers of any kind providing protection or separation for the traffic. Sooner or later, someone will make a mistake, with potentially serious consequences.

Furthermore, there are no warning signs and no control of speed appropriate for a construction site such as this along a highway. If this were any other state or federal highway, we feel sure that safety would be practiced much more rigorously. We don’t completely understand why this construction site is being handled differently from standard practices, or who is responsible, but it should be remedied immediately, for the benefits of both the Los Alamos/White Rock public and the construction workers.

We don’t know if this matter falls under the jurisdiction or responsibility of the County Council. However, it certainly effects all residents of the County and we hope the Council can help move this serious issue in the right direction.
