Letter To The Editor: Response To Gary Stradling’s Defense Of Jan. 6 Insurrection

As a registered Democrats of many years, my wife and I were very pleased with the outcome of our state elections.

We consider ourselves lucky to live in a state where progressive, productive politics dominate the landscape. As I perused the county councilor election results and candidate responses in the Daily Post, I noticed and read the letter Gary Stradling submitted.

Gary started out his letter very nicely, giving credit to the democratic process and rule of law. He appeared to be magnanimous in his defeat.  And then… he launched into a defense of the January 6 insurrection. Yes Gary, it was an insurrection. Gary attempted to minimize and gloss over a violent and deadly incident by characterizing a violent mob as “demonstrators with flags, thermoses, and folding chairs?”

Really? People died that day Gary. People were roaming our nation’s capital looking to HANG our vice president and Speaker of the House. – And they were carrying a lot more than thermoses and lawn chairs. He goes on to hypothesize that the general public was driven to extremes by the unwillingness of the courts to give fair hearing to accusations of voter fraud, when in fact numerous judges and even sitting republican congressmen and women dismissed these claims when the accusers failed time and time again to present any concrete proof.

He stated that “The president’s team, appealing to legal, though rare, ambiguous, and unprecedented constitutional processes to resolve the legally unresolved questions of the elections, through appeals to state legislatures, was fraught with uncertainty that added confusion to the issue.” He fails to admit that all such appeals were soundly rebuffed because they could provide absolutely no proof of their allegations.  And we know now that subsequently, after further extensive investigation from both sides, not a sliver of proof of voter fraud was ever uncovered.

Gary Stadling knows this but chooses to play the game that too many of the current breed of republicans now play: Participate in the democratic process until they loose and then claim the system is rigged. Hmm, who got that trend started? Yea, New Mexico ranks low in a lot of things, which of course has existed under both political parties, but at least we’re not ruled by the party of NO. You ended your gracious concession letter with what is now the old republican trope of election fraud conspiracies. Nice try on the magnanimous thing there Gary. I’m just elated that the voting public in Los Alamos could spot the fake.
