By WENDY HOFFMANPlease allow me to respond to two previous letters: I respectfully, but vehemently, disagree with the “writer” who labeled the bear pictures as stupid. I always fear the lack of objectivity of people who choose emotional descriptiveness instead of looking for an intelligent way to deliver a point.
I find the photos enjoyable as well as educational. As a resident of the county, I WANT to know when these creatures are around and what they’re doing. I believe the photos contribute to public safety. I see no reason why we can’t all work together for the bear-proofing equipment while enjoying the photos, and I certainly don’t think their being published harms our planet. Please continue keeping us well informed.
I also want to thank George Chandler for his perspective on the local retail economy. Having lived here for almost 43 years, I have developed a loyalty to the “shop local” concept, and I’ve mourned the closing of every store – from our “chain” McDonalds in White Rock to the whole White Rock Village full of little, classy, locally owned shops. But I’ve also shopped in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and Espanola when I couldn’t find what I needed on the Hill.
I completely agree with George that the new market will keep people shopping at home before hitting the road; that may mean they’ll try our smaller local stores, too, and everyone will benefit. I also expect the new market to assist in bringing new families to our county. During my 20-year tenure as the physician recruiter at LAMC, I found lack of shopping to be one of the biggest deterrents to doctors and their families who loved so many other things about our town – recreation, scenery, education, etc.
In any case, I hope the skeptics will give it a fair chance and the chronic complainers will be quiet while the rest of us enjoy such a nice new place in its beautiful setting.
Thanx, Carol, for providing us with a great news source.
