Letter To The Editor: Proper Display Of American Flag

BY ED MCDARIS, Vice President
Chapter 19 American Legion Riders

I am very proud and happy of the many houses and businesses in our community that display the American flag.

Los Alamos has played a very important part in our nation’s history and the overwhelming support shown by this act of patriotism is moving to say the least. However, (there’s always got to be a however) it is just as important to display the flag properly.

Recently, President Obama ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff for the victims of San Bernardino and then again on Dec. 7 (Pearl Harbor Day). As I drove through town during the times the flag was ordered to be flown at half-staff I noticed several churches, businesses and even some county buildings not following that order.

It is a great honor to display the flag and with this honor comes the responsibility to display it properly. If you have any questions as to how to properly display the flag, there are many websites that have that information and even some that will automatically send you a notice of when it is to be flown at half-staff. The best website I have found is this one http://www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html.

Please continue to “Fly the Colors” with pride.
