Letter To The Editor: Possible Big Tax Increase Looms

Lisa Shin opposes Triad National Security LLC paying state gross receipts taxes (GRT). https://ladailypost.comcontent/house-dist-43-candidates-share-their-backgrounds-and-ideas-recent-league-women-voter-forum

According to Los Alamos County Manager Harry Burgess, this would result in Los Alamos County (LAC) losing $20 million/year, which is 40 percent of its general fund budget! https://www.abqjournal.com/1235462/lanl-tax-status-now-in-question.html

Does anyone think that LAC would actually cut its budget by that much?

So, if Ms. Shin has her way, the only obvious result is a huge increase in property taxes. Why should LANL be the only one of the 17 national lab sites to not pay local taxes?

Earlier this year, the Legislature passed a bill that would apply GRT to any nonprofit running the Lab, but Gov. Martinez vetoed the measure. With a new governor taking over, hopefully a similar bill, if passed by the Legislature in 2019, would be signed. However, there is little chance such a bill would pass if Lisa Shin is our elected representative.
