Letter To The Editor: Love Your Neighbor

Love your neighbor as yourself. We are all your neighbor!

In 1983 it was not just taboo for a gay man to raise a child; it was completely unheard of. Thus, when I was born, I was given to a ‘good, god-fearing’ family to raise me. Those “people” tried to raise me to hate gays, people of color, and anything/anyone that was different.

I didn’t think they were right then, and I certainly do not think they are right today. I am a Christian, but I also believe that some pastors are using their power for evil and turning their flock against people. Aren’t they supposed to be a light in the world? Aren’t they supposed to show love to others?

Today, as my family and I were driving to church we looked closely at the white rock … that said DT 2024 and F*CK PRIDE. This must stop. This cannot continue. This has gone too far!

Love is patient:

I would like to know where the patience has been from the GOP to the town this June while people are celebrating pride month. There has been no patience, there have only been a ‘me first’ attitude and a complete display of intolerance from the right.

Love is kind:

When we first moved to this town we were welcomed. We felt like we belonged. We felt this was an incredible place for us to raise our children and finally settle down. Having moved more than 20 times in my life I was very pleased to find a welcoming sense of permanence. However, over the years we learned that only runs surface level at most.

This town is not kind to anyone who doesn’t fit inside their very small box. This town judges so harshly those they do not understand. Instead of taking the time to get to know someone, it’s a ‘they are different so strike them down’ mentality. That isn’t a place to raise children, it’s not even safe to be different here.  The GOP is so hateful and hurtful to those they do not understand. That is the exact opposite of kindness.

Love does not envy:

Envy is such a difficult thing to describe and understand. However, this too has become harmful. The increased ‘They shouldn’t be able to marry’ comments, and the ‘They should only be allowed behind closed doors’ posts are proving that the GOP is either envious of the fact that the LGBTQIA+ community has been granted the same freedoms as they have OR they just do not want to allow them any dignity.

Love does not boast, Love is not Proud:

The GOP keeps spouting the same rhetoric. “Why can’t we have a straight pride month?” Why? Because straight couples have never been targeted or attacked simply because they were straight. Continuing to push the ‘straight pride’ agenda is harmful because not everyone is straight. Why can’t we all just get along? Why? Because the GOP is attacking those who don’t fit within the parameters of their ideal nuclear family.

Love does not dishonor others:

I believe this one is self explanatory, but I’ll elaborate anyways. The LGBTQIA+ community is not seeking to dishonor or harm anyone. However, when a queerphobe writes F*CK PRIDE on the white rock, that is shaming and bringing dishonor. When the people like Valerie Fox write letters stating that books in the school library depicting anything other than their version of a nuclear family have no place at the school and need to be removed, this brings dishonor and harm to those students. She also believes the LGBTQIA+ community should have NO support in the public schools.

Love is not self-seeking:

The GOP believes that EVERYONE needs to fit within their narrow parameters of what they view as the ideal nuclear family, and anyone outside their narrow scope is wrong.

Love is not easily angered:

Poor Mr. Donald (the gentleman who painted over the rock in primer grey) has now painted over the rock too many times for me to keep track of (last I knew it was 3, but I stopped paying attention to Mr. Donald).  Mr. Donald, a member of the GOP, had to paint over the rock because it was “No place to be displaying that stuff”. He said so with vitriol in his voice. I don’t know or understand why he was so angry, but he was clearly easily angered…

Love keeps no record of wrongs:

The GOP continued to get angry over the painting of the light poles. Apparently, they either thought the light poles were more important than people, or they preferred the swastikas and the anarchy symbols painted on them.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth:

Causing continued pain and suffering to a group of people is wrong. The GOP has been targeting and laughing about the suffering they inflict within the LGBTQIA+ community. This is disturbing to say the least.

Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres:

I am proud to say that I served my country’s Navy combat team with Honor, Courage, and Commitment.  I served because I believed that EVERYONE deserved to have a voice and have the freedom to express themselves. I will continue to fight to give a voice to those who do not have one and to help PROTECT others from harm.
