In response to the letter about wildlife published in today’s Los Alamos Daily Post – the dumpsters are the property of Los Alamos County. LAMC has been working diligently with both Los Alamos County and New Mexico Game and Fish to resolve this difficult issue.
All three organizations have worked cooperatively to purchase new bear-resistant dumpsters that, we hope, will soon be delivered. Unfortunately the dumpsters are manufactured to order, so the process takes some time.
LAMC plays no part in the decision law enforcement officers make on how bears are managed, and we were very saddened to learn the bear had been shot. We will continue to instruct our staff to use the one bear-resistant lid dumpster for food waste and remind individuals in the community not to use LAMC commercial dumpsters for their residential trash.
We hope these changes will allow people and wildlife to peacefully co-exist.
