Letter to the Editor: Is Council For Or Against Food Tax?

I am writing to bring to the attention of the people of Los Alamos the possible consequences of the County Council’s recent approval of the New Mexico Municipal League’s Legislative Agenda.

According to a story in the Los Alamos Daily Post from Think New Mexico: “Just in time for the holidays, the New Mexico Municipal League (which represents New Mexico’s mayors and city councilors) is bringing its latest proposal to reimpose a regressive food tax Think New Mexico championed the repeal of this anti-family tax back in 2004 and, thanks to the efforts of New Mexicans in communities across the state, we defeated attempts to reimpose it in 2010 and 2013. This time around, we’ve launched a petition to present to mayors, city councils, the legislature and the governor, asking them to stand with everyday New Mexicans and reject the food tax. We encourage you to sign it and share it with your friends and family.”

In another story in the Los Alamos Daily Post, the County Council has approved the New Mexico Municipal League’s Legislative Agenda, where it will support: “Consensus legislative priorities of New Mexico Association of Counties and New Mexico Municipal League” and oppose “Proposals that would reduce the County’s receipt of general GRT revenue.”

So my question is: Is the County Council for or against reinstating a food tax?” It would appear that the Council is in favor of such an action, but I wanted to give them a chance to respond.
