Letter To The Editor: Endorsement For Dr. Bryan Fearey For UNM-LA Advisory Board

By R.T. PERRY, Ph.D.
Los Alamos

I am R.T. Perry, Ph.D., a resident of Los Alamos. I wish to recommend an extremely qualified candidate for UNM-LA Advisory Board. He is Bryan Fearey, Ph.D. Bryan is a 39-year resident of Los Alamos. He retired from Los Alamos National Laboratory after 32 years of service. Fearey’s many roles at LANL included serving as director of the National Security Office, Senior National Security Science Advisor and as the Department of Defense’s Official U.S. Science Adviser among other distinguished positions. Such experience provides experience for a successful membership of the Advisory Board. Following his retirement, he became a consultant, using his expertise in enhancing national security.

I had the honor of working with Bryan at the Laboratory. In addition to being an extremely knowledgeable excellent supervisor that inspired his colleagues, I found his visions of the future, his ideas concerning science and education to be oriented toward increasing the quality of life in our nation. This vision also applies to the citizens of Los Alamos where the focus is on education of the young.

Bryan has an extremely strong background in academics. He has a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. Bryan has held several adjunct professorships. His wife, Maureen Connolly has a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. They were staunch supports of their two daughters as thy worked their way through the rigors of obtaining college degrees. I had a Ph.D. student that worked at the lab during the summer during the time I worked with Bryan.

Under Bryan’s tutorage, the student not only successfully completed his project, and in doing so, was able to publish two journal articles. The student then worked on projects of Bryan’s vision, and completed his dissertation on the subjects. These serve as examples of Bryan’s commitment toward academic achievement. These are the type of quality goals he would bring to the Advisory Board.

Not only is Bryan interested in scientific academics but also of the arts. He and his wife are staunch supporters of the Los Alamos community. They have created the Fearey/Connolly Endowed Scholarship for Science and the Arts to honor their enduring commitment to science serving the nation’s national security needs and to provide financial support to students with a similar interest at its core and a passion for performance music and/or visual arts. It should be noted that Bryan is an accomplished musician and plays in a local band.

Fearey and Connolly have been contributing to the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund (LAESF) since its inception. He served several years on the LAESF Advisory Committee, which oversees the scholarship funds and selects recipients.

Again, here is an example of commitments to the community and of even more relevant experience that will help him serve the Advisory Board well.

Bryan Fearey, Ph.D. is an outstanding candidate for membership on the UNM-LA Advisory Board. It is my profound belief, that Dr. Fearey’s experience, leadership and vision, will help guide the University at Los Alamos to even greater academic excellence, not only in science, but also in the arts.
