ALBUQUERQUE — The Hunt Institute will host its 2nd Annual New Mexico Legislators Retreat on May 7-8, 2026, in Albuquerque, NM, bringing together state legislators from across the state to address the state’s most pressing education issues.
The 2026 Retreat is hosted in partnership with bipartisan and bicameral Co-Chairs, Senator Leo Jaramillo, Senator Bill Soules, Representative Brian Baca, and Representative Joy Garratt, reflecting The Hunt Institute’s enduring commitment to cultivating bipartisan leadership in support of students and the state’s future.
“As we continue to build on the momentum from our first Retreat last year, we are pleased to convene members of the New Mexico Legislature once again as they focus on the pressing needs facing communities and students of all ages and backgrounds,” said Dr. Javaid Siddiqi, President & CEO of The Hunt Institute. “As we mark The Hunt Institute’s 25th anniversary and honor former four-term North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt, this convening reflects our commitment to nonpartisan collaboration that strengthens education policy for students in New Mexico and the nation.”
The Retreat will also feature conversations with early childhood leaders about New Mexico’s ongoing efforts to expand access and its national leadership in this area, as well as discussions on the current needs of K–12 students and educators. In addition, participants will explore the importance of higher education institutions continuing to align their workforce development efforts with evolving state and regional priorities.

The Hunt Institute is honored to welcome former Governor Susana Martinez, Vice Chair of its Board of Directors, who will provide remarks on behalf of the Board and share with legislators The Hunt Institute’s commitment to research and support that The Institute has brought to leaders across the country, including New Mexico.
Additionally, legislators and will hear from New Mexico Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales, Hunt-Kean Leadership Fellow, Cohort 6, who will share insights on the state’s education landscape and the important priorities making an impact across New Mexico’s diverse population.
Legislative members and guests will also hear remarks from Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller, Hunt-Kean Leadership Fellow, Cohort 11, as he welcomes legislators to the city.
