LWVLA News:
Members of the League of Women Voters of Los Alamos gathered for League Day at the New Mexico Legislature Thursday in Santa Fe.
Proclamations and memorials abounded honoring both the centennial of women’s right to vote and the founding of the League of Women Voters in the United States and New Mexico.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham read her proclamation in the rotunda to an enthusiastic, standing-room-only crowd of League members and friends, many dressed in suffragist white or purple with traditional sashes.
Memorials also were presented in the House and Senate, with League of Women Voters of New Mexico board members standing for recognition.
Rep. Christine Chandler of Los Alamos was a presenter in the House. Virginia Kase, CEO of the national League, spoke in the rotunda, as well as giving the keynote speech to the legislative reception the preceding night.
The Los Alamos League, founded in 1947, also was honored Tuesday by the Los Alamos County Council.
More Centennial events are planned this spring and summer.
