LLA News:

The 2024 Leadership Los Alamos (LLA) cohort gathered Nov. 17 at UNM-Los Alamos for an educational session aimed at exploring prevalent education-related topics. While the main focus was on Los Alamos education, the discussions extended to regional and New Mexico state issues. These discussions highlighted the current educational landscape, addressing challenges, advancements, and trends in pedagogical approaches, curriculum developments, and educational philosophies.

The day commenced with insights from Jennifer Guy, Superintendent of LAPS, and Mike Holtzclaw, UNM-LA Chancellor, offering foundational information about educational opportunities in Los Alamos. Linda Nash, Adult Education Program Manager at UNM-LA, provided a comprehensive overview of adult education and workforce programs. Discussions centered on initiatives fostering the development of future generations.

Renee Dunwoody, LAHS Principal, along with LAHS students, shared informative sessions showcasing unique offerings at LAHS. Panels highlighted the direct impact of educational initiatives on students, including academic achievements and social-emotional well-being within the educational system.

The schedule included a panel discussion exploring how dual credit classes support LAHS students’ educational journey locally, focusing on career pathways, skill-building programs, and preparing students for an evolving world.

The exploration of UNM-LA facilities provided fascinating observations. A university tour is immensely valuable for multiple parties engaged in the educational sphere, encompassing potential students, parents, educators, and the institution itself. It grants direct exposure and understanding of campus life, amenities, academic offerings, and extracurricular engagements, aiding in assessing the atmosphere, ethos, and available resources. Additionally, it delivers an interactive educational encounter, spotlighting academic departments, specialized amenities, and labs, offering visitors a preview of the educational prospects and practical learning experiences awaiting them.

Sharon Fogle, the Curriculum and Assessment Director and Sigrid Wurthmann, Literacy Specialist discussed LAPS’ reading instruction approaches. Andrea Determan, Director of Inclusive Schools, emphasized creating a safe and inclusive environment for LAPS students.

Dr. Paul Allen, Dean of Instruction, provided insights into UNM-LA’s Community Partnerships, fostering collaborative connections among UNM-LA, LANL, LAPS, and diverse entities within the LA community. These partnerships aim to achieve common objectives that mutually benefit the educational institution and the broader community.

Superintendent Jennifer Guy and UNM-LA Chancellor Mike Holtzclaw concluded with a reflection on various issues, including additional funding sources to support education in Los Alamos.

Each session provided exceptional insights into education, showcasing LAPS and UNM-LA initiatives for Los Alamos and future generations. These insights collectively offered valuable information on educational methods, community engagement, and strategies to empower upcoming generations.

The day was concluded with an overview of the Local Government session by Juan Rael and Linda Matteson that sparked enthusiasm for January’s session.
