Who doesn’t want to go on an adventure? There something thrilling and romantic about leaving the comfort and security of home in exchange for the great unknown that lies in the far corners of the map.
This is what “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” provides moviegoers – the opportunity to tag along on a great adventure.
Let me tell you, it is a wonderful ride although be prepared for long pauses on this epic journey because apparently this story is being spread out into three films.
The first film educates the audience on all the main characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel, “The Hobbit” as well as the origins of their quest and the start of the adventure.
It draws attention to the world of dwarves and how it became hindered by a dragon named Smaug who has a love of treasure.
A group of dwarves, along with the wizard, Gandalf, and the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, set out to defeat Smaug. But there are certainly other trials along the way.
The beauty of this fantasy world, from the elegant and regal city of the elves that perches on waterfalls to the rocky labyrinths that plunge deep into the earth where goblins dwell, will take your breath away.
You may want to hold onto the theater seat’s arm rests as well if you are viewing the film in 3-D because this technology will make you feel as though you, too, are falling down rocky abysses, running from grotesque goblins or soaring through the air on the back of an eagle.
You will certainly fall in love with the gang of adventurers. Ian McKellen is superb as Gandalf. He reveals the wizard’s warmth and humor as well as the character’s worry that something perilous is beginning to threaten his world.
Another standout is Martin Freeman as Bilbo. Bilbo goes through quite a profound change through the course of the movie. He begins the quest timidly but with each turn and obstacle proves his worth.
The dwarves, however, were my personal favorite characters. They are more humorous and human than the stately elves and even as they flounder, this group of wanderers has each other’s back.
So if you are in the mood for an adventure, see “The Hobbit.” Just hold on tight, you’ll be in for a great, wild ride.
