LARSO Invites Community To Build-A-Box For Homebound

LARSO News

Last December, the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization (LARSO) introduced the Build A Box – Feed A Senior initiative to fill the pantries of older adults with nourishing, shelf-stable meals.

LARSO strives to address food insecurity and isolation through our Home Delivered Meal program, a joint effort between our Meal Services and Transportation Departments that delivers an average of 18,000 meals a year to homebound older adults.

While a deeply essential service, LARSO can only provide one meal a day to recipients, potentially leaving up to two-thirds of their daily nutritional needs unaddressed. With the delay and reduction in SNAP benefits this November, LARSO has decided to start the Build A Box initiative a month earlier this year.

Here’s how Build A Box works:

  • Find a sturdy box, approximately 12×12 inches, to serve as a package.
  • Fill the box with nutritious, shelf-stable items, such as canned vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal, and other essentials.
  • Securely tape the box closed and label it Build A Box. Feel free to wrap it in decorative paper or tie a ribbon around the box!
  • Drop off the lovingly prepared box at either Senior Activity Center during open hours between through Nov. 14.
  • Every box contributed will be personally delivered to homebound seniors during the week of Nov. 17, bringing food, warmth, hope, and community spirit.

Los Alamos Retired & Senior Organization (LARSO) invites the community to participate in this heartfelt campaign to make a meaningful difference in the lives of homebound older adults. With each box built, people are not just filling it with food; they are sending a message of care this holiday season.
