LAPS Selects Kristen Martines As New Principal At Barranca Mesa Elementary

Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) has announced that Kristen Martines has been selected as the new Principal at Barranca Mesa Elementary School.

Martines is a former Los Alamos Middle School Hawk and Los Alamos High School  Hilltopper. She graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in reading. She earned her master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico Highlands University and then earned her administrative license.

“I am honored to join the Bobcat family as the new principal,” Martines said. “I have heard amazing things about the Barranca students, staff and families.”

Martines said she is looking forward in the days ahead to meeting and working with the Barranca community to create an inspiring and supportive environment for students. 

“Mrs. Martines is an outstanding educator who will bring her drive, passion, and love for students to Barranca,” Superintendent Jennifer Guy said. “I am looking forward to introducing her to the school community.”

Being an educator in LAPS for the past 20 years has provided Martines the knowledge to develop the strengths and needs of Los Alamos students. She has taught at Aspen Elementary School and at Piñon Elementary School for the past 16 years.

“Making a difference in the lives of students and watching them learn and grow is my passion,” Martines said.

She is married to Jason Martines. They have lived in White Rock for the last 20 years and have three children, Jaxson, Maddox and Nixyn. She stays busy cheering her kids on at their sports and activities.

Martines will host a Meet the Principal event, Popsicles with the Principal, 6-7 p.m.  Monday, Aug. 5, on the back bus loop patio at Barranca.
