LAPS Foundation News:
The Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) Foundation administers several memorial scholarships to graduating seniors each year.
Memorial Scholarship recipients from the Class of 2025:
The Irene Boone Memorial Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of long-time Los Alamos resident and pediatrician, Dr. Irene Boone and her husband, Zanas “Slim” Boone. This year Andie Kelly and Annabelle Rosette were the recipients of the Boone Scholarship. Andie will attend the University of New Mexico and study criminology. Annabelle will attend the University of New Mexico and major in international relations.
Zoe Bent, Isabella Blair, Hyunoo “Hayden” Kim and Sofia West were selected for the Sophia Feldman Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship honors Sophia Feldman, a Los Alamos High School student who passed away in September 2019. Sophia was passionate about helping and supporting people and had many interests, including dance, music, and speech and debate. The scholarships are awarded to students for their exemplary academic and personal conduct, combined with participation in mentoring, anti-bullying, social justice, or related activities. Zoe will attend the University of Vermont, majoring in environmental science. Isabella will attend Fordham University to study political science and pre-law. Hayden will attend the United States Naval Academy and major in nuclear engineering. Sofia plans to study neuroscience at Baylor University.
Andie Kelly is also the recipient of the Ross and Lola Ramsey Memorial Scholarship this year. This is the third year for the Ramsey Scholarship, which is awarded in memory of the Ramseys who were long time managers of the Civic Auditorium, now the Duane Smith Auditorium. The Ramseys created and directed the renowned Olions theater program and established the Topper Revue. The scholarship was established by a group of former students who wanted to honor the legacy of the Ramseys for their profound role in shaping the lives of thousands of students at Los Alamos High School. In addition to the scholarship, the stage at the Duane Smith Auditorium has been named the Ross and Lola Ramsey Stage.
The Raymon “Ray” Maldonado Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Ray Maldonado, a Los Alamos High School student who passed away in February 2024. This year marks the inaugural presentation of the scholarship, which was created to celebrate Ray’s life and his many interests, including robotics, culinary arts, online gaming, Young Life, mountain biking, and also his love for the outdoors. Three graduating seniors were selected as the first recipients, chosen for qualities and aspirations that reflect Ray’s spirit. Jack Dunwoody will attend New Mexico State University to pursue a degree in computer engineering. Sophia Pieck will study nursing at Northern Arizona University. Mikayla Padilla was also named a recipient of the scholarship.
