Effective today, Mr. Brad Parker has been appointed interim Principal at Los Alamos High School. Dr. Debbie Belew-Nyquist will not be returning as Principal for the 2015-16 school year.
Parker’s background in education is extensive. His teaching experience includes biology and physical science instruction as well as leading at-risk tutoring at Santa Fe High School. He also taught life science at Los Alamos Middle School.
In the area of school administration, Parker has served as Principal at Capshaw Middle School in Santa Fe, Assistant Principal at Vista Grande Elementary School in Rio Rancho, and Principal of Jemez Valley Elementary, Mid and High Schools. He also served as Athletic Director in the Jemez Valley Public Schools. Most recently, Mr. Parker has served as Principal at Barranca Elementary School since 2013.
Parker’s work at the State Education Department includes serving as Apprenticeship Director and Continuous School Improvement Consultant. He administered the state Apprenticeship Assistance Act and federal Carl Perkins funding. He helped lead a statewide team that wrote the Career Programs of Study plan that coordinated career readiness education programs at secondary and post-secondary institutions.
Parker’s professional experience also includes work as an AdvancED Field Consultant and External Accreditation Chairperson in New Mexico, other states, and overseas Department of Defense Schools.
Parker has a B.A in Biology from West Virginia University, a B.S. in Secondary Education and a M.A. in Educational Administration. Both latter degrees are from the University of New Mexico.
