Los Alamos Public Schools experienced a cybersecurity incident Aug. 8. Acting Superintendent Jennifer Guy updated the Los Alamos Daily Post today about the incident.
“We were first made aware of the problem when we had a difficult time restoring internet service,” Guy said. “Fortunately, our technology team caught the problem very quickly and isolated the activity. The district has worked closely with third-party computer specialists to ensure that a thorough review of all of our systems took place.”
In the course of the investigation, it was discovered certain files containing information relating to individuals were downloaded, Guy said. PowerSchool, the student information system, was not compromised or leaked. District financial systems also were not impacted.
“The privacy and security of our staff and students is important to us,” she said.
Individuals whose information may have been contained in the files were notified by mail Friday, Dec. 16, Guy said. Each letter has information specific to those who may have been involved and specific information about steps to take to protect their information. The information of anyone who did not receive a letter was most likely not involved.
“The technology department will provide a full report on cybersecurity at LAPS early next semester,” Guy said. “We have verified that all our systems are secure and are taking steps to continue to improve security.”
