Crime statistics for Los Alamos County for the second quarter of 2017 were released today by Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone. The report contains crimes against persons such as murder/homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault as well as crimes against property such as arson, burglary, larceny and auto theft.

This quarter’s report reflects two rapes and one aggravated assault. According to Cmdr. Preston Ballew, the two rape cases are still under investigation and no arrests have been made. The aggravated assault case involved the beating May 12 of an elderly Los Alamos woman by one of two women who followed her home from Smith’s Marketplace and left her lying in her driveway.

LAPD detectives released a photo of the vehicle they believe was driven by the women and a $250 reward was offered by Crime Stoppers, however the women have never been identified.

According to Ballew, offenses reported as crime statistics are determined by the Federal Bureau of Investigations Uniform Crime Report Program. The LAPD report is generated by the LAPD Records Division.

The crimes against persons and property combined are referred to as Part 1 Offenses, Ballew said. During the second quarter of 2017, officers responded to a total of 36 overall Part 1 Offense complaints, down from the 40 offenses reported during the same period in 2016.  Violent crime offenses double from three offenses in 2016 to six in the same period this year. Property crime offenses decreased from 37 in 2016 to 30 in 2017.

“While crime continues to decline, the Los Alamos Police Department encourages our residents to practice safety by securing their homes and vehicles,” Chief Sgambellone said.
